Barbara E. Kahn is Patty and Jay H. Baker Professor of Marketing at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. She served two terms as the Director of the Jay H. Baker Retailing Center. Prior to rejoining Wharton in 2011, Barbara served as the Dean and Schein Professor of Marketing at the School of Business Administration, University of Miami (from 2007 to 2011). Before becoming Dean at UM, she spent 17 years at Wharton as Silberberg Professor of Marketing.  She was also Vice Dean of the Wharton Undergraduate program. She is the author of Global Brand Power: Leveraging Branding for Long-Term Growth and co-author of The Grocery Revolution: The New Focus on the Consumer, which documented the changes in the grocery business in the mid-1990s when Walmart became a force in the industry.

Cet ouvrage résulte de la volonté de chercheurs de plusieurs pays, venant d'horizons différents, de démontrer comment la chimie contribue aujourd'hui au développement durable de la biomasse lignocellulosique. Les principes de la chimie verte et du génie durable sont en effet devenus des moteurs essentiels dans l'évolution de l'industrie et permettent la transformation de cette biomasse en produits innovants.
Destiné aux élèves des écoles d'ingénieurs et aux étudiants travaillant sur des programmes portant sur les matériaux biosourcés, ce manuel didactique s'appuie sur des recherches récentes. Les premiers chapitres reviennent sur la définition de la structure du bois et son étude par infrarouge. Une section est consacrée à la transformation thermochimique du bois avec pour objectif de démontrer le potentiel réel de la production des bio-huiles pyrolytiques et des bio-chars, tout en résumant les concepts d'ingénierie impliqués dans ces types de transformation.
La partie centrale de l'ouvrage examine les différents types de bioraffinage lignocellulosique, dont la bioraffinerie intégrée dans le procédé dominant de mise en pâte, dont le procédé Kraft. S'y trouvent exposé le procédé de transformation de la pate Kraft blanchie en nanocellulose, la transformation enzymatique de la lignine et encore l'exploitation d'autres constituants de la liqueur noire comme le méthanol.
Un chapitre, dédié aux hémicelluloses de la pré-hydrolyse de ce même procédé, revisite la mise en pâte organosolv pour explorer les propriétés exceptionnelles des lignines qui en résultent. L'ouvrage souligne enfin la valorisation des extractibles forestiers, principalement les polyphénols, constituants essentiels de la biomasse lignocellulosique. Les applications innovantes des biopolyméres provenant de la biomasse confirment donc clairement l'importance de la chimie du bois dans la conception de produits innovants et éco-citoyens.
